Spartans win multiple events at Cal Opener

San Jose State track and field began the outdoor portion of their season as they participated in the Cal opener on Saturday. 

“This week is typically a little difficult because it marks the transition from the indoor season to the outdoor season,” assistant coach Tianna Madison said. 

Nine Spartans set personal bests in their respective disciplines during the meet. 

Junior Sky Hagan placed first in the 100m dash with a personal best time of 11.78 seconds.

Junior Christopher Coats also finished first in the 100m dash with a personal best time of 10.53. 

Both the mens and womens 4×100 relay teams finished in first place with times of 40.50 and 45.28 respectively. 

Senior Lina Schubert took first in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.73m. Competing in the men’s high jump, freshman Deshawn Banks placed third with a mark of 1.98m. 

Sophomore Gabriella Hernandez finished third in the 2000 steeplechase with a time of 8:13.94. 

Junior Eve Divinity finished third in the women’s 200m dash with a time of 24.60. 

The Spartans will take to the track and field next against Sacramento State on March 22 for the Hornet Invitational at Hornet Stadium.
