The San Jose State softball team (8-9) lost 3-0 to Brigham Young University (12-4) to open up the Libby Matson Tournament at Bill Simoni Field in Friday’s doubleheader.
SJSU had five hits, more than BYU’s three, but the Cougars capitalized with two RBIs while the Spartans failed to score.
Despite the shutout, SJSU left fielder Jules Ronquillo went 2-for-3, providing solid offensive numbers. Both SJSU second baseman Ahmiya Noriega and shortstop Taylor Chillingworth went 1-for-3 with a single, while right fielder Carly Cummings finished 1-for-2 with a single.
“We had plenty of opportunities,” head coach Tammy Lohman said in a video on the team’s website. “We just didn’t take advantage of them with runners in scoring position against BYU.”
The game remained close until the fifth inning when an error allowed the Cougars to capitalize and score two runs. BYU added one more in the sixth to finish the game.
Lacie Ham got the start and put up a strong effort, going 5.0 innings with four strikeouts, one earned run, and only giving up two hits. Ham now has five starts of five innings or more this season.
