San Jose State men’s soccer (4-7-6, WAC 3-3-2) picked up a dominant 3-0 victory in its matchup against Grand Canyon University (5-9-3, WAC 2-5-1).
The Spartans started off strong controlling the ball from the start of the whistle and never looked back.
Three different players for SJSU would record a goal in the game against GCU.
The Spartans came out in the ninth minute and scored on a scorcher outside the box off the foot of freshman Cameron Cook. This was his second goal of the season and put the team up 1-0.
Cook would record a game leading five shots with three being on goal.
“I’m pleased he got a good goal, but not only the goal, he looked two or three times where he could have added to that,” SJSU head coach Simon Tobin said.
In the 16th minute, sophomore Angel Fernandez scored his first goal of the season to stretch the Spartan lead to 2-0.
Junior Angel Inguez recorded three assists in the match contributing to the three Spartan goals.
SJSU not only showed off offensive skills but also defensive pressure. It held GCU to just three shots in the entire game.
In the 86th minute of the match junior Anthony Guzman put the game on ice after scoring his first goal of the season.
“Just a big relief, you know, been looking for that one, not my best season being injured coming into his season,” Guzman said.
Junior goalkeeper Ronin Axelson recorded his first victory as a Spartan in only his second career start. It is also the first career shutout for Axelson.
“(Ronin) Axelson only got his second start as a goalie, and for him to get a clean sheet is big,” Tobin said.
The Spartans control their own destiny into the WAC tournament as they currently sit tied for fourth place with 11 points and just one game remaining.
Only six teams get into the tournament with three spots already clinched by San Diego State, Seattle and California Baptist.
