No. 13 San Jose State men’s water polo (9-3, 1-1 WCC) closed out the Harvard Invitational with a doubleheader sweep Sunday in Providence, R.I., going 4-0 in the two-day invitational including three wins against ranked teams.
“Very exciting for the guys to come out of a 4-0 weekend,” SJSU associate head coach Gabor Sarusi said in a video posted to the SJSU Athletics website.
In the first game, against No. 19 Brown (11-6, 3-2 NWPC), SJSU won 17-11. The 17 goals are a season high for SJSU.
It wasn’t easy at first as the Bears led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter before the Spartans found their footing en route to victory.
Senior center Bence Szabo scored six goals in the game. It is the most goals scored by a Spartan in any game this season.
Junior driver Mateja Bosić recorded three goals and three assists in the game.
In the second game, against No. 20 Navy (14-7, 4-2 CWPA), SJSU won 16-13.
The Spartans were in control of the game as they led 10-3 in the third quarter before the Midshipmen started a comeback effort that ended just short.
Szabo scored four goals in the game, surpassing 100 goals in his career.
Sophomore Mitchell Keightley led the Spartans with six points, five goals and one assist.
Bosić led the team with three assists.
SJSU’s next game is scheduled for noon Thursday at home against Fordham.
