San Jose State women’s soccer (0-10-4, MW 0-4-2) fall short 1-0 at home to UNLV (6-6-2, MW 4-1-1) despite its offensive surge.

The Spartans came out aggressive early against the Rebels in the first half with eight shots and had chances early to get on the scoreboard.

SJSU finished with 11 total shots in the match while holding UNLV to just eight. Junior midfielder Michelle Madrid scored the lone goal in the 49th minute to propel the Rebels to victory.

Senior midfielder Taylor Phillips was a bright spot in the contest with seven shots and two being on goal.

“We were pushing to the end like we didn’t give up,” Phillips said. “I feel like everyone’s trying so hard and has been really mentally focused, and it’s just kind of not going our way.”

San Jose State continues its offensive season woes as they have not scored a goal in four consecutive games.

“We had a great performance today. We outshot them the first half… in the second half they got one early they really didn’t have many opportunities but they had that one,” SJSU head coach Tina Estrada said. “We bobbled it with our goalie and they finished it.”

As a team they have scored five total goals in 14 matches and will have to find the back of the next to pick up its first win of the season.

San Jose will look to pick up their first win of the season as they go on the road to face the San Diego State Aztecs (4-7-3, MW 2-2-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at SDSU SportsDeck.
