Women’s soccer looks to get back on track

By Keanu Haghighi (@KeanuHaghighi):

The San Jose State women’s soccer team (1-4-0) is looking to bounce back against the Cal Poly Mustangs (2-3-1) after a frustrating defeat against the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas where the team was held to two shots on goal the entire game.

This will be the second game of its five-game home stand.

There is a lot of room for improvement as the Hoyas shut down the Spartans in every facet of the game last Saturday. The Spartans fell behind early in the sixth minute and could not seem to regroup as Georgetown dominated possession of the ball the majority of the game.

Similarly to the Georgetown, Cal Poly is another aggressive team which has already racked up nine yellow cards and 78 fouls in just six games this year.

After the Spartans less-than-ideal start to the season, they are hoping to turn the season around with another big performance from senior forward Dorthe Hoppius, who leads the team in shots and points.

A player the Spartans need to watch out for on the other side of the ball is Mustangs senior midfielder, Megan Abutin. She leads the team in almost every offensive statistical category this year and is ranked second all-time in school history in assists.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
