It was a rough night for San Jose State men’s soccer (1-2-1) as it lost 1-0 on the road Thursday against Cal Poly (1-3-1).

This marks the third game this season the Spartans got held to one goal or less.

Junior midfielder Angel Iniguez led SJSU in the game with three shots, including one in the 12th minute that went off the post.

“Good game at Cal Poly tonight, we deserved to get something out of it,” SJSU head coach Simon Tobin said in a video posted to the SJSU Athletics website.

The game was tightly contested as the Spartans had seven shots compared to the Mustangs’ eight.

The difference in the game was Mustangs sophomore midfielder Diego Guerra’s goal in the 35th minute which was the only goal scored by either team.

The Spartans did have a bright spot with redshirt junior Edgar Guerra recording two saves and playing all 90 minutes, one of four Spartans to play the entire game. He has 11 saves this season.

Guerra has started in all four contests for the Spartans this season, being the only SJSU goalkeeper to take the field in 2024.

Despite getting shutout, Tobin is proud of his team’s performance in the game.

“I’m actually quite proud of the way we played, especially the second half and just getting ready for UCSD next week,” Tobin said.

SJSU’s next game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex against UC San Diego.
