San Jose State baseball (8-14, 4-6 MW) took the first game in a weekend series against New Mexico (13-9, 4-3 MW) winning 16-13 on the road.
The Spartans successfully pulled off a 13-9 comeback after being down multiple times throughout the game.
SJSU came alive in the top of the ninth inning scoring four runs after three-consecutive home runs thanks to respective seniors, catcher Zach Griffin, third baseman Dalton Bowling and center fielder Sebastian Orduno.
“We were down numerous times,” SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said in an X video. “I am just really proud of our effort.”
The Spartans were able to capitalize on the Lobos’ pitching woes scoring a run in every inning except the eighth. They would score seven-more runs in the final three innings while shutting out the Lobos.
There was also a collective effort on the mound from SJSU junior pitcher Nolan George and senior pitcher Cade Van Allen. Van Allen recorded five strikeouts, holding off the Lobos in the bottom of the ninth.
“Our bullpen did a great job,” Sanfilippo said. He also said that their pitching allowed them to come back.
The Spartans have a quick turn around as they are scheduled to play the Lobos on their turf again in a doubleheader Saturday. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and the second game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Santa Ana Star Field.
