SJSU track and field start outdoor season at Hornet-Invitational

San Jose State track and field started its outdoor season at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, Calif. from March 15-16.

Women’s finished in seventh place out of 17 teams whereas men’s finished in fourth place out of 20.

Heading into the meet, SJSU head coach Charles Ryan acknowledged there could be a feeling out process in the first outdoor events of the season.

“The indoor season season is so short at the conference Championships that when people have good performances they feel great about them and want to race again,” Ryan said. “Well there’s a delay and the team just been practicing for three weeks so there’s always a lot of nerve in the first outdoor meet.

Day One:

On the first event of the day Pablo Villasenor threw for a personal record 57.25 meters and finished fourth overall in the mens hammer throw.

Mens triple jump followed and Ethan Fong jumped for a personal best 14.5 meters, good enough for fifth place.

Alyssa Bean led the women’s team in the 200-meter dash finishing in 12th place with a time of 24.29 seconds.

In the afternoon of the second day, the men’s and women’s 4×100 meter teams each finished in first place.

Day Two:

SJSU women’s finished in 45.29 seconds with a team a team consisting of Selena Arjona-Alcazar, Eve Divinity, Morgan Little and Nakai Johnson. The mens team finished in 39.95 seconds with Malachi Snow, Issac Davis, Jaden Smith, Cameron Tarver and Jeremiah Walker.

The Spartans saw three top-five runners in the 110-meter hurdles. Demaris Waters and Snow carried finished in first and third place respectively with scores of 13.75 and 13.88. Micah Hairston finished fourth with a time of 14.14.

The Spartans carried their momentum into the last event of the day in the 4×400 meter race.

To start things off, Sarah Mosteller, Aliyah Williams, Savana Dutton and Bean led the race with a time of 3:41.03. The mens finished second with a time 3:10.25 with Tarver, Walker, Smith and Harry Overstreet.

The Spartans face off against Fresno State in the West Coast Relays on March 22-23 in Clovis, Calif.
