No. 21 SJSU women’s water polo split home weekend stand

No. 21 San Jose State women’s water polo went 1-1 on the weekend at home as it took on No. 3 Stanford and No. 13 UC Santa Barbara.

Day One:

The Spartans(7-7, 0-1 MPSF) lost 12-5 to No. 3 ranked Stanford(11-3, 1-0 MPSF) Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans were in the game after three quarters trailing 7-5, but the lead started to quickly grow. SJSU would not score during the final quarter as Stanford put five points on the board.

There were no lead changes as San Jose would tie it in 1-1 in the first but trailed for the remainder of the match.

Sophomore Sinia Plotz was a standout player for the Spartans scoring three of the team’s five goals.

San Jose State shot just 23.8% and had a difficult task creating shots and it showed against a top raked opponent.

Day Two:

The Spartans(7-7, 0-1 MPSF) turned it around on Sunday in a thrilling win as it defeated No. 13 UC Santa Barbara (12-8, 1-0 BW).

There were 13 lead changes in this game as the Spartans finally put away the game in triple overtime by a final score of 13-12.

Senior Ryan Lucchesi scored the final goal with 1:45 left to end the game for the Spartans.

Plotz would continue her amazing weekend as she contributed to five of the team’s 13 points, while also adding one steal and block to help out the team.

For San Jose State, it had six steals in this game to help its scoring compared to the two steals that Santa Barbara received.

The team will head to the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Friday as it will play four games over a two day stretch.
