It was nothing pretty for San Jose State (9-21, 2-15 MW) in a 68-50 loss to UNLV (18-10, 11-5 MW).
UNLV has now won nine of its last 10 games and is currently the hottest team in the Mountain West. In the first half for the Spartans everything that could go wrong, went wrong.
In the first half SJSU’s two best players in junior guards Myron Amey Jr. and Alvaro Cardenas both had three fouls and were forced to sit on the bench.
On top of that freshman guard Latrell Davis also picked up three fouls and had to take a break from the action.
So SJSU had to attempt to keep the game close with their top three guards all being in foul trouble.
“We just dug too big of a hole early,” head coach Tim Miles said. “The second half was a good effort but, our offense just wasn’t good enough all night.”
Cardenas was the only Spartan who could get into any consistent rhythm shooting the ball as he was the teams top scorer with 17 points shooting 6-9 from the field.
Freshman Diogo Seixas left the game with a nose injury in the first half after taking on elbow to the face playing defense on the drive and would not return.
The Spartans also came out the gates offensively extremely slow shooting 1-11 from the field and finishing the first half shooting only 5-25.
UNLV is one of the best shot blocking teams in the Mountain West and they proved that by rejecting SJSU 10 times on the game which was tied for their season high.
Fifth year forwards and brothers Kalib Boone and Keylan Boone had 4 blocks a piece on the game.
SJSU was outrebounded on the game 44-28 and once again showed the fact they are missing a physical inside presence.
SJSU will come back home for its last home game of the season to face off against No. 22 Utah State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
