The San Jose State women’s basketball team was handed its eighth straight loss after suffering a devastating blowout on the road to Boise State 73-42.
The Spartans (6-16, 1-9 MW) had 27 turnovers along with a poor 30% shooting from the field. As for the Broncos (15-8, 6-4 MW), guard Natalie Pasco’s 19 points along with the team’s efficient 46% shooting was more than enough for Boise State to get its 15th win of the season.
“We are learning; we are growing,” SJSU head coach April Phillips said in an X video posted to SJSU Athletics. “We have to get out of that space of hitting that wall and not fighting back.”
It was a rough second half for SJSU to say the least. The Spartans shot only 15% from the field while the Broncos shot 52% from the field. Both teams were able to capitalize from the free-throw line with SJSU making 83% of theirs and the Boise State shooting 76%.
However, the Broncos were better defensively with seven blocks and 16 steals.
SJSU kept it close in the first half with the game tied 29. But the Spartans were heavily outscored in the second half scoring only 13 points compared to the Broncos’ 44 points, 29 of those coming in the fourth quarter.
SJSU’s leading scorer was sophomore guard Sabrina Ma who scored 13 points on nine shots while shooting 75% from the 3-point line. Ma also contributed two rebounds and a block.
The absence of SJSU freshman guard Jyah LoVett these past four games has greatly affected their offense given that she is the team’s leading scorer averaging 14.6 points a game on 41.5% shooting.
“We are very young,” Phillips said in the same X video. “There’s more than simply basketball that goes into growing these young women.”
SJSU will host San Diego State at 2 p.m. on Saturday with the its mind set on snapping the now eight-game losing streak.
