After initially having their match rained out on Monday, the SJSU tennis team(1-0) began its season Tuesday afternoon with a convincing 6-1 over U.C. Riverside(0-3).

The day started with doubles games where the Spartans went undefeated.

Freshmen Duru Durgun and Cheuk Ying Shek got their first wins of their collegiate careers with these victories. And they wouldn’t stop there.

They also accounted for two of the five singles match wins they had on the day. All five women won their matches in straight sets.

Senior Jovanna Babic dominated allowing her opponent just one point in her two-set singles match.

And the one SJSU player that lost, Irena Muradyan, mustered her match to a competitive three sets.

The team is coming off a final four appearance in the Mountain West Championship last season despite coming in as the eight seed.

This was only the second time the teams have ever played against each other with the first match taking place in 2010. Ironically, both matches have ended with a 6-1 finish.

SJSU will play its first home match Saturday against Sacramento State at noon. The Spartans lost a year ago to the Hornets by a 4-3 score in Sacramento.
