SJSU women’s volleyball dropped one match in the Hornet Invitational to host Sacramento State. The Spartans walk away with another 2-1 record in their second tournament this season.

After nearly getting swept by the Hornets, the Spartans (4-2) ended their tournament play with a sweep of Cal State Fullerton (0-6).

Junior Blaire Fleming led the way for the Spartans who finished with a high of 43 kills over the weekend.

DAY 1

The Spartans gained their first win 3-1 after facing the University of Portland Pilots (3-3).

SJSU fell short in the first set by five points to lose, 25-20.

They would come back to win three sets in a row with scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-15.

Leading by nine in the fifth set and on match point, to serve was freshman Teya Nguyen who ended the match with an ace that couldn’t be dug.

The Spartans were led by Fleming and senior Letizia Cammillucci who both had 13 kills each.

Assisting the duo was the freshman Nayeli Ti’a with nine kills.

At the net, holding the Pilots was senior Jiana Lawson who made 11 blocks on the day with Fleming having seven.

DAY 2

SJSU got a taste of its own medicine on the second day of the tourney after it lost the match 3-1 to Sacramento State (5-1). This is only San Jose’s second loss of the season so far.

The Spartans only won the third set 27-25 to avoid the sweep.

Again, the duo of Fleming and Cammilucci led SJSU. Fleming had 16 kills with Cammilucci having 12.

DAY 3

On the final day of the tourney, they would face Cal State Fullerton.

The Spartans swept the Titans with scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21.

Once again taking the reigns for SJSU was Fleming with 14 kills on the day. Lawson was behind her with nine kills.

SJSU now moves their record to 4-2 on the season. They will next participate in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational in Buies Creek, North Carolina next weekend.
