The SJSU softball team defeated Utah State Aggies in a 2-0 shutout in the series opener Thursday night.
The last game against the Santa Clara Broncos resulted in a shutout against San Jose (22-25, 10-10 MW), which carried over as momentum needed to shutout the Aggies (17-25, 8-12 MW) in their second meeting of the season.
Like their previous game against Santa Clara, the first six innings of the Spartans’ latest game passed without either team scoring a run. In the sixth inning, San Jose State managed to take the lead thanks to two runs batted in by Adrianna Noriega and sophomore utility player Aubrie Thomas.
Jenessa Ullegue threw her sixth complete game of the season, pitching seven innings and not allowing any runs. With this performance, she now ranks sixth in career strikeouts in Spartan history, with a total of 370.
The Spartans received two hits and two errors on top of the two runs in the second meeting with Utah State.
“They had plenty of opportunity to get back in the game,” said head coach Tammy Lohmann. “The defense just found a way to close the door on them, overall good team effort.”
The next game of the SJSU softball series will be on Friday at 3 p.m. in San Jose.
