SJSU softball (9-14 , 0-0 MW) handed University of Rhode Island (2-12, 0-0) its fifth straight loss Saturday night winning the matchup 3-1 at Spartan Softball Stadium.
On the second day of the SVC classic, the Spartans started the day with a loss to CSUN, but quickly bounced back with a win over URI splitting the day with a 1-1 record.
Redshirt senior pitcher Jenessa Ullegue had a career night vs URI. Ullegue went seven innings with 13 strikeouts, three hits and allowed only one run.
Ullegue is only five strikeouts away from joining the 300 strikeouts club for her career.
Redshirt junior center fielder Adrianna Noriega got the scoring started for the Spartans with a single to left field in the first inning, scoring redshirt senior third baseman Alyssa Graham.
In the second inning, redshirt senior second baseman Jessica Giacoma singled to right field scoring another run for SJSU.
For the Rams, their only run came in the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Jessica Hennelly doubled to center field, scoring senior infielder Cassie Swenson. Hennelly’s double wasn’t enough to spark a rally for the URI.
This is the Spartans second win over the Rams so far this season.
SJSU plays URI one more time Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. in Spartans softball stadium.
