The Mountain West Golf Championship teed off today at the Mission Hills Country Club and after the first round of competition, #35-San Jose State is slotted in the fifth position.
The Spartans are 10 strokes behind #30- San Diego State, #45-UNLV and New Mexico all locked at -1.
As she’s done all year, My Leander had the top score of SJSU’s five, finishing at 70 (-2) on the 72-par course, good for third place overall, yet no other Spartan finished closer than 4 strokes. The tournament’s overall leader after one day is UNM’s Manon Molle, alone at the top of the leaderboard shooting -4.
The rest of the Spartans was all above par.
Abegail Arevalo finished her day at +2, Alexandra Cooper with a +4, Elizabeth Schultz +5 and Franziska Friedrich +9.
Arevalo ended her round tied for 17th place, and was one of just 3 in the field of 45 to record a birdie on the par-four #12.
Cooper’s round has her slotted in 29th place at four-over par.
Schultz finished with one shot more than her teammate Cooper, finishing tied for 30th place.
Four shots below and at the bottom of the Spartans’ scoreboard, Friedrich shot a 9-over 81 and sits tied for 40th.
The second round of the conference championship continues tomorrow starting at 7 a.m.
