SJSU women’s tennis (3-5) closed out their four-game homestand with a disappointing 1-4 loss against Cal Poly (2-5).

After a challenging loss against GCU last week, the team was looking to improve on doubles matches. However, SJSU will have to go back to the drawing board during its long break.

Fifth-year Alba Pedrero Galindo and Junior Carolina Millan graced the courts as a duo today. This marks their first doubles match together this season.

Although it was their first appearance, the team won their doubles match (6-2). They were the only SJSU team to win their match.

Without the cushion of a doubles point, SJSU would have to clobber for a win in its singles matches.

Senior Lara Marco Mas participated in both singles and doubles. She boasts a whopping nine total points in doubles with three different partners. Marco Mas has not participated in singles since the Jan. 28 match against Sacramento State.

Despite the addition of Marco Mas in singles, she (4-7, 5-7) and the rest of the team finished with unsuccessful results. Pedrero Galindo started off strong in her first game (6-0, 2-6, 2-6) but fizzled out in her second and third games. Pedrero Galindo now holds a 5-6 record in singles matches.

Junior Jovana Babic was the sole dub of the team (6-6, 7-4, 6-3). Babic is now on a six-game winning streak when it comes to singles matches.

In spite of the tough losses, Millan refused to go out without a fight. She kept her games as close as possible (6-3, 7-5) but was unable to finish due to Cal Poly’s early clinch.

SJSU also struggled with tiebreakers in this match. Both Senior Rozalina Youseva (6-8, 2-6) and Marco Mas failed to snag key tiebreaker wins in their matches. The two went on to lose their respective matches in the second game.

The Spartans lacked the necessary momentum needed to get the dub without the doubles point or the key tiebreaker wins in singles. The losses made in singles were not enough to overpower Cal Poly.

SJSU women’s tennis (3-5) will take a break before facing the Santa Clara Broncos (0-5) at Santa Clara on Friday, March 10 at 11:00 am.
