The SJSU club ice hockey team have now won 20 straight games against Santa Clara University after they won the pair of games this weekend against their longtime rivals.

First-year head coach Vaughn Reuter swept the longtime rivals to extend the club’s win streak to an astonishing undefeated record of 20-0 against Santa Clara.

“I really try to impress upon the group how important it is as a club, as a program, to honor the past and the players that have already come before us and what they have done,” said Reuter.

The atmosphere was loud and energetic which grew with each goal scored and each hit being laid out.

Captain Christopher Dysart was named player of the week with seven goals and four assists throughout the pair of games that concluded with Senior night on Saturday.

Friday’s game ended 10-5 with Dysart scoring four goals and in Saturday’s ended 7-3 with Dysart scoring 3 goals, a hat trick in both games.

During the first period of Friday’s game, SJSU goaltender Nicholas Checklenis received a penalty which he served, a rare occurrence in hockey for a goalie to serve their own penalty.

“Its easy to get a lot of passion and a lot of excitement in these games,” Checklenis said.

Checklenis who started in both games for the Spartans, praises Reuter with the handling of the club in his first year as head coach.

“You can tell he loves this team and that he really cares about hockey in general and the Spartans organization,” said Checklenis. “Were are super duper lucky to have him.”

The SJSU club ice hockey team will travel to Oregon to face off the University of Oregon for the final two games of the season on February 17 and the 18th.
