SJSU women’s water polo narrowly falls to Fresno State at Cal Cup

San Jose State women’s water polo (2-5) wrapped up the CAL Cup by losing its 4th match in a row as it fell 9-7 to Fresno State (2-5) on Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. The Spartans were coming off a 12-8 loss to UC Davis earlier on Sunday morning.

Five SJSU women’s water polo players were able to score a goal during the match.

Graduate Clarissa Wandindger scored the first goal of the match with 3:04 left in the first quarter.

Fresno State led 4-3 at the end of the second period after sophomore Abigayle Armstrong scored a goal with a second left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-3 after senior Daphne Guevremont scored her third goal of the match with 4:23 left in the third quarter. This was Fresno State’s largest lead of the match.

The Spartans cut their deficit to 6-5 by the end of the third quarter with goals from both freshman Sinia Plotz and Senior Lior Ben David. Both Plotz and Ben David finished the match with two goals each.

Fresno State edged out SJSU by scoring twice in the final minute of the fourth quarter, as sophomore Brooke Oocha scored a decisive goal with eight seconds left to push the lead to 9-7.

The Spartans attempted 27 shots, one less than the Bulldogs despite losing the sprint for the ball at the start of all four quarters.

Graduate goalkeeper Hannah Henry finished with 12 blocks and eight goals allowed.

“We had some adversity with our sickness but we always approach these games with a mindset that these are opportunities for us to continue to develop,” said head coach Beth Harberts.

SJSU women’s water polo looks to bounce back when it heads to Palo Alto, Calif for the Stanford Invitational next Sunday to face Michigan (5-2) at 10:30 a.m and then Arizona State (3-1) at 3:30 p.m
