San Jose State women’s basketball (2-13, 0-4 MW) came up short in a 65-51 loss to Fresno State (8-9, 1-3 MW) on Saturday afternoon inside the Save Mart Center.
Both the Spartans and Bulldogs came into this contest on a 4-game losing streak.
SJSU stumbled to start the first quarter, missing on their first four shots.
Fresno State led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs showed precise passing with six assists in the period.
Freshmen guard Sydney Dethman shined with 12 of the Bulldogs’ 23 points in the second quarter. Dethman led Fresno State to a 39-26 advantage with a perfect 6-6 shooting in the second.
Freshmen guard Sabrina Ma led the Spartans with 10 points, shooting 4-5 and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
SJSU missed their first five shots to start the third quarter.
The Bulldogs led 49-35 at the end of the third quarter despite shooting 4-12 in the period. The Spartans shot a slightly better 4-11 in the third.
SJSU made four of its first five shots to start the fourth quarter but Fresno State closed the game with a 66-51 win after shooting 6-8 from the free-throw line in the final period.
Three of the eight active SJSU basketball players finished the game with nine points or more.
Ma finished with 13 points off 5-9 shooting while sophomore center Amhyia Moreland provided 11 points and three rebounds.
Junior guard Jasmine Singleton finished with a career-high eight rebounds and extended her streak to seven consecutive games with a steal.
Singleton is currently fifth in the mountain west conference with 2.2 steals per game.
“Really proud of our ladies, we were down some players tonight and they fought,” said head coach April Phillips.
SJSU women’s basketball hopes to snap out of its 5-game losing streak when it hosts UNLV this upcoming Wednesday inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
