SJSU women’s basketball drops fourth straight to Air Force

San Jose State women’s basketball (2-12, 0-3 MW) fell 77-64 to Air Force (7-8, 2-1 MW) on Thursday night inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

The Spartans opened the game with a 6-2 lead after a layup from sophomore forward Marisa Davis-Jones.

The Falcons bounced back by ending the 1st quarter with a 19-16 lead despite committing six turnovers.

Air Force started the second quarter by making its first six of seven shots and extended its lead to 33-21 after a layup from sophomore guard Madison Smith.

The Spartans trailed 40-27 at halftime after shooting 4-13 and committing five turnovers in the second quarter.

Smith led all scorers with 18 points at the intermission, shooting 7-11 and 4-5 from beyond the arc.

Davis-Jones led the Spartans with 10 points and five rebounds at the halfway point.

Air Force pushed its lead to 60-38 after senior guard Kamri Heath knocked down two free throws with a minute left in the third quarter. This was the Falcons’ largest lead of the night.

The Spartans made four of their last five shots but still trailed 60-43 at the end of the third.

Davis-Jones provided nine points off 4-4 shooting in the third quarter. She finished with a career-high 24 points, the most a SJSU women’s basketball player has scored this season

The Spartans cut the Falcons’ lead to 72-62 after a layup from sophomore center Amhyia Moreland with a minute left in the game.

Moreland scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Air Force closed out with a 77-64 win while not making a single field goal in the last five minutes of the game.

“Really proud of our fight down the stretch . . . we’re just going to keep building” said head coach April Phillips.

SJSU women’s basketball looks to snap its losing streak when it faces Fresno State this saturday inside the Save Mart Center. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
