San Jose State Women’s Basketball (2-10, 0-1 MW) began conference play with a 64-47 loss to Nevada (3-8, 1-0 MW) on Thursday afternoon inside the Lawlor Events Center.
The Spartans led 15-9 after junior guard Jasmine Singleton made a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter.
SJSU shot a precise 6-12 shooting and went a perfect 2-2 from behind the 3-pt line in the quarter.
The Spartans extended their lead to 23-14 with six minutes left in the second quarter after freshman guard Sabrina Ma cashed in a shot from beyond the arc.
The Wolf Pack then went on a 16-4 run and seized a 30-27 lead to end the second quarter.
Junior guard Alyssa Jimenez led all scorers with 10 points, while sophomore guard Sidney Richards led the Spartans with six points at the intermission.
The Wolf Pack opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run, pushing their lead to 39-29.
Then Singleton made the Spartans’ first field goal of the third and cut the deficit to 39-31 with six minutes left in the quarter.
Nevada finished the third with a 50-35 lead after junior guard Tiffany Siu made a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter.
The Wolf Pack prevailed over the Spartans 64-47 despite being held to 2-10 shooting in the fourth quarter.
Singleton led in scoring for SJSU women’s basketball for the second consecutive game with nine points off 4-7 shooting.
Both sophomore center Amhyia Moreland and Richards finished with eight points.
“Got away from the gameplan, with a group that is inexperienced as this. . . we’re working toward it, and we’ll get there,” said head coach April Phillips.
SJSU women’s basketball looks to bounce back from this loss when it faces Boise State inside the ExtraMile Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is at 12 p.m. PT
