SJSU women’s basketball (2-8, 0-0 MW) defeated UC San Diego (2-7, 0-0 Big West) 70-56 on Sunday night inside the Event Center. The Spartans snap a 6-game losing streak with this win.
The Tritons started the game with a 9-4 lead after freshman guard Junae Mahan made a jump shot inside the paint. UC San Diego finished the first quarter with a 13-9 lead over SJSU.
Sophomore guard Sidney Richards led all scorers with seven points after the first period.
The Tritons extended their lead to 20-10 after a 7-1 run to start the second quarter.
The Spartans responded with a 20-3 run after a 3-pointer from sophomore forward Marisa Davis-Jones and ended the first half with a 30-23 lead over the Tritons.
SJSU shot an efficient 8-11 and went 3-4 from beyond the arc in the second quarter. Senior guard Jada Holland went 3-3 on field goal attempts and provided seven points for the Spartans after not playing in the first quarter.
UC San Diego opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run after making their first three shots.
Then, freshmen guard Sabrina Ma made a 3-pointer to push the Spartans’ lead to 35-30 with seven minutes left in the period.
SJSU closed the third quarter with a 56-45 lead over UC San Diego. Holland and Ma both led the Spartans with six points each in the quarter.
The Spartans started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run and pushed their lead to 65-45 after a 3-pointer from Davis-Jones.
SJSU finished UC San Diego 70-56 after making a season-high 10 3-pointers.
Three SJSU women’s basketball players finished with double digits in scoring. Holland led the Spartans with 17 points while Ma provided 12 points with a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc.
“That is San Jose State Basketball, that is the identity we having been working and striving towards” said head coach April Phillips.
SJSU women’s basketball plays Hawaii next inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center this Wednesday in its final non-conference game. Tipoff is scheduled at 2 p.m.
