SJSU women’s soccer (7-6-5, 6-3-2 MW) defeated rival Fresno State (1-14-5, 1-8-2 MW) 1-0 on Thursday night.

The Spartans won their final regular season game but it wasn’t enough to get the bye week for the playoffs. With New Mexico tying in its game and Wyoming winning its final game, the tiebreaker gives New Mexico and Wyoming the bye week.

SJSU managed to get third place in the Mountain West, it got to share the regular-season championship with both teams.

The Spartans and Bulldogs came out battling in the first half with the Spartans leading in shots 7-3.

With 30 seconds left in the half, SJSU sophomore midfielder Kayla Fortenberry had a shot that just hit the post. The sound of the ball hitting the bar was drowned out by a loud sigh from the crowd.

In the second half, both teams came out looking to score the first goal of the game. In the 80th minute, the Spartans were awarded a corner kick and got to score the winning goal by junior midfielder Cynthia Flores.

The Spartans celebrated and stormed off the field with the Mountain West trophy in their hands.

“None other than Cynthia Flores and another amazing header that I keep saying this all year that no one can replicate what she does,” said SJSU head coach Tina Estrada.

SJSU women’s soccer plays against Colorado College in the Mountain West Championship tournament on Sunday in Albuquerque, N.M. at 3 p.m.
