San Jose State women’s golf attended the Illini Women’s Invitational in Medinah, Illinois where they finished in third place out of 15 teams.
The team set a new school record for the lowest 54-hole tournament score at 28-under 836. The broken record was a 24-under 840 which was set last season at the Mountain View Collegiate. SJSU women’s golf is coming off a first-place win at the USF Invitational and the trip to the Midwest was long awaited for a team that is hungry to make it to nationals in back-to-back years.
The Spartans finished day one in first place behind some great play from graduate student Antonia Malate. She finished the day tied for fourth after shooting a 71 in the first round and a round-best 64 in the second round. Malate had a clean card in the second round with eight birdies and 10 pars.
Malate tied the low-round school record and finished day one in fourth place. Junior Jordyn Parr shot a 9-under 135 on the first day and tied for fourth as well.
As a team, SJSU women’s golf shot a 276 in the first round and a 275 in the second round to sit in first place after day one, with Kentucky only behind them by one shot.
In the final round, Malate shot a 1-under 71 to finish tied for seventh place. Parr tied for 13th place, finishing at 7-under 209. Parr made seven consecutive pars to end the day.
Junior Louisa Carlbom tied for 19th at 5-under 211 and started the final round with seven consecutive pars of her own. Carlbom, Malate and Parr all finished in the top 20 for SJSU.
Despite some good play all around, the Spartans slid down to third place behind Auburn and Kentucky. Some putts did not roll in down the line, but it was still a record-setting invitational for SJSU women’s golf.
The Spartans will play another 54 holes at the Stanford Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 21.
