SJSU men’s golf finished third out of nine teams at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational at the Sonoma Golf Club.
The Spartans most recently finished in ninth place at the Husky Invitational at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. They came into Sonoma hoping to finish higher in the leaderboards.
SJSU finished tied for third after the first day behind some great scores from senior Caleb Shetler, junior Kristopher Stiles and freshman Avinash Iyer. Shetler shot a 140 on a 36-hole first day with a round-best score of 65 in the second round. Stiles and Iyer each shot a 141 on the first day.
SJSU men’s golf shot a round-low 280 in the second to keep them within striking distance of UC Berkeley and Minnesota.
In the third round on Tuesday, Shetler shot a 68 and finished tied for third in the individual standings. Stiles tied for 10th place after shooting a 71 and Iyer tied for 17th after shooting a 75.
As a team, the Spartans finished in third place with a score of 858, only one shot ahead of Drexel.
Further down the leaderboards, sophomore Zubair Firdaus tied for 27th place with a 219 and senior Kotaro Murata tied for 41st with a 222.
SJSU men’s golf had a good showing at the Sonoma Golf Club, finishing only two points behind Minnesota for third place. Good play from several different athletes allowed them to compete through both days of the invitational, but there is still room for improvement.
The Spartans will attend the Stockton Pacific Invitational at the Stockton Golf & Country Club on Thursday, October 20.
