The third time proved to be a charm for San Jose State who finally faced Santa Clara this season after the first two meetings were rained out.
After the month-long wait, the Spartans put the Broncos (2-6) back into the stable with a 5-2 win.
SJSU (6-4) started it’s play with a bang in doubles. The No. 3 pair Miyo Kobayashi and Tamara Culibrk finished first with 6-2.
They were followed by No. 2 doubles pair Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey, winning 6-4.
The Spartans continued their winning into the singles matches. Marie Klocker took out Santa Clara in two straight sets over Danielle Silva to secure her 132nd win — an SJSU record for most career wins.
No. 92 ranked Sybille Gauvain won her match as well.
Despite being down 5-4 in the second set, Gauvain rallied back to a 7-5 victory. With her performance, the Spartans won in singles.
The only singles match that wasn’t a clean sweep was between SJSU freshmen Culibrk and SCU’s Zeina El Tawil. Culibrk won the first 6-4 but lost 4-6 in the second. She broke the tie breaker 1-0 to put up another win for the Spartans.
SJSU successfully reached it’s fourth singles win to take the match 5-2.
The Spartans return to the Almaden Valley courts again on Thursday, March 16 against Illinois State.
