San Jose State men’s soccer (3-3-1) (WAC 0-0-0) were able to secure a win Thursday night as it beat University of Pacific (1-7-1) (WCC 0-0-0) 2-0 in dominating fashion.

Throughout the first half, the game was contested as both sides looked to play their own style but neither side was able to breakthrough. SJSU and UOP both totaled 13 fouls in the first 45 minutes alone. It was a tactical game with little to no clarity.

In the second half, the game changed right away and swung in favor of the Spartans. Freshman midfielder Angel Iniguez scored in the 46th minute as the team pushed lines and put pressure on the opposition. Like that, the freshman was able to get his first goal of the season.

Minutes later, after a series of rebounds inside the box, graduate midfielder Finlay Wood was able to score the second goal of the night and his first of the season as well.

SJSU men’s soccer surely could have expanded the scoresheet even further, as they had seven shots on goal in the second half. However, they were able to find enough breaks to come out on top as the game winded down.

Senior goalkeeper David Sweeney was able to get his second clean sheet of the night as he made a fantastic stop in the last minute of the match to keep it 2-0 for the Spartans.

“We’re coming together…no goals conceded, these last couple of games we have started to build momentum and we’re playing some nice stuff,” said SJSU head coach Simon Tobin after the game on Twitter.

With this win, the Spartans are now on a two-game winning streak for the first time this season. Which is a positive as they will have their first conference game in their next matchup.

“I think we got a little more settled team right now, so it’s pleasing because hopefully we are clicking at the right time just before conference,” Tobin added.

SJSU men’s soccer will play at home again in its first WAC match against Houston Christian on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
