The San Jose State men’s water polo team (1-0, 0-0 GCC) beat Santa Clara University (0-1, 0-0 WWPA), 10-8, in their season opener.
SJSU had control of the game through the first three quarters, taking a commanding 10-3 lead. Freshman Nikola Nikolic and sophomore Bende Pardi had two goals each to push the Spartans towards their first win of the season. The wealth was evenly distributed, as six other Spartans each scored a goal of their own.
The Spartans were dominant to start the game and were playing as a cohesive unit. Sophomore goalkeeper, Jamie Steingrady, stopped nine in the net and had six steals to keep the Spartans afloat.
In the final quarter, the Broncos pushed back, scoring five goals unanswered but the Spartan lead was insurmountable. SJSU starts its season with a win against their local rival and they hope to keep the momentum rolling into week two.
The Spartans play UCSB on Sept. 10th at SJSU at 3 p.m.
