Opinion: Court design proposed for Provident Union Event Center are solid until …

Why microchips?

San Jose State Athletics is asking fans to vote on a new look for the Provident Credit Union Event Center floor for the 2022-23 season. The four proposed court designs are mostly great except for one.

This design is a reference to Silicon Valley but the microchip being the main draw to the design just isn’t my cup of tea. It is too distracting and I feel it will take focus away from the players who play on the court. This court color is also really dark and I just don’t like it. If the brightness of the microchip wasn’t as bright I think the court would look better, but I still don’t know if it would be my favorite.

The design that was my favorite was this court.

This is a great design. It goes super simplistic with just an outline of the spartan head and a mostly light court color. I am a sucker for simplistic design, so there is no doubt in my mind that this is my favorite option. I think the lighter court would be a great change and in a way it is symbolic of a bright future for our men’s and women’s basketball team.

These next two courts keep the same logos, but the top court goes for a darker tone while the bottom design stays true to the current court that SJSU has right now. I like both of these designs pretty equally. I don’t really have a preference of colors, so if any of these two courts win the poll I wouldn’t be surprised.

Now I would be surprised if the microchip design wins the poll and as of April 6, it looks like I will be surprised.

The microchip design has a commanding lead with 40% of the vote. The dark design trails with 28% of the vote, followed by the simplistic design with 18% and the original design with 14%.

I find it fascinating that the original design is last in the polling since it’s virtually the same court there is now. It seems that people aren’t a fan of our court even though I thought it was good. I just can’t believe that the microchip court is the design people would rather have.

If you would like to vote for yourself here is a link. Votes are due by April 10 at 11:59 p.m.  The winning design will be announced the week of April 11.https://sjsuspartans.com/poll.aspx?poll=4
