The San Jose State softball team took on Fresno State in a three-game conference through the weekend.

The Spartans started off well against the Bulldogs on Friday, April 1.

Junior Jillian Figueroa led the Spartans to the lead with a triple during the second inning. With Figueroa’s play, the Spartans scored two more times in the same inning. They finished the second inning,  3-0.

SJSU continued to stay in the lead and scored again in the third inning. The Spartans maintained themselves in the lead for the next four innings, ending the game with a 4-0, beating the Bulldogs.

Despite the first win out of the three matches, the Bulldogs took the lead on Saturday, April 2. Fresno took the lead in the second inning, 1-0. The Spartans took their time, scoring in the fourth inning, 2-1.

The Spartans could not continue as the Bulldogs scored in the third, 3-1, and seventh inning, 5-1. SJSU lost their match as Fresno State ended with a win, 5-1.

Head coach Tammy Lohmann shared in a video on Twitter that their main focus, after the 5-1 loss, for the following game was to “pick up their defense.”

To wrap up the last game of the conference, the Spartans took the lead during the third inning, 2-0. Senior Alyssa Graham and freshman Aubrey Thomas assisted in taking the lead.

However, that did not last long as the Bulldogs quickly caught up in the fourth inning, 3-2. Fresno continued to score and stay in the lead after the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the last match with a win, 5-2. Fresno ended with a 2-1 win.

The Spartans will now “get back to work” before heading off to Stockton to play against the University of Pacific on Thursday, April 7.
