San Jose State softball split Saturday’s home doubleheader against a pair of Aggies — Utah State and UC Davis.
The Spartans turned on the heat in their first game, as they scored six runs in the first match against Utah State.
The winning pitcher for the Spartans was senior Caroline Bowman (2-4), who outperformed Utah State’s pitcher Jessica Stewart (2-2) in SJSU’s 6-2 win.
On the other hand, the Spartans fell by one run to UC Davis in game two of the doubleheader.
Starting pitcher Lacie Ham took on hitter after hitter with three continuous strikeouts in less than five minutes in the first inning of the game.
“I feel our energy was pretty good in both games,” Ham said. “UC Davis is a pretty good team. We should have battled it out earlier in the game rather than later.”
The Spartans kept a strong game and strike after strike, making it a challenge for the Aggies to score.
Yet, the Aggies took a huge leap in the fourth inning scoring two back-to-back runs.
In the seventh and final inning, SJSU was called out at third base down 2-1, ending the game and securing the Aggies a victory.
“I think the big thing about a team when playing a back-to-back game is being able to flush down the first one,” said head coach Tammy Lohmann. “If you win or lose, it’s the ability to bounce back and come back that second game, and find a way to win.”
The Spartans are now preparing for an upcoming conference three-game series against University of New Mexico. First pitch is Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m.
