San Jose State lost to the University of Nevada, 12-7 in a game originally in its control.

Robert Hamchuk came out of the gates strong and hit his third leadoff home run of the season. Omar Gastelum followed this up with an RBI single and the Spartans finished the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Danny Zimmerman hit a deep three-run home run to left field to put the Spartans up 6-2. This was Zimmerman’s first home run as a Spartan, and it was a big one.

After a slow start, Nevada decided to turn things up. Nevada came into the fourth inning a completely different team, scoring six runs to take the lead. Nevada got two more runs in the sixth inning to go up 11-6.

The game’s only error came in the fourth inning by the Spartans as their defense fell apart. The Spartans cycled through four pitchers, none of which had a good showing.

After three scoreless innings for the Spartans, Gastelum came up big again, scoring on a sac fly from Dalton Bowling in the top of the seventh.

Jack Colette singled to right field to put Gastelum on second in a final push. With the bases loaded at the top of the ninth with only one out, the Spartans had a chance to narrow the margin. Nelson Padilla stuck-out and Hamchuk was the last hope, hitting a fly ball to right field to end the game.

The Spartans drop to 9-5 and have an end put to their three-game winning streak.

The Spartans play University of Nevada Saturday at 1 p.m. in the second meeting of three over the weekend.
