Swimming: Day-by-day breakdowns of Mountain West championship

Wednesday, Feb. 16

The 200-meter medley relay team, sophomores Kayla Craft-Williams, Reagan Mathieson and freshman Zsófia Muzsnay, finished in eighth place with a time of 1:42:92.

Muzsnay, Mathieson, junior Réka Kovács and freshman Ela Freiman teamed up for the 800-meter freestyle relay placing in eighth place again, however, they swam a season-best with a time of 7:26.19.

The day ended with SJSU placing ninth with 88 points and the University of Nevada Reno placing first with 236 points.

Thursday, Feb. 17

The Spartans reached the finals for the 500-meter freestyle with Muzsnay finishing seventh with a time of 4:45.16 and Kovács finishing 22nd with a time of 5:01.57.

The 400 medley relay team consisted of senior Chloe Limargo, Williams, Muzsnay and Mathieson.

They swam the ninth-fastest time in school history, with a time of 3:42.79 and finished in fifth place.

SJSU ended the day in eighth place with 207 points and San Diego State leading in standings with a total of 643 points.

Friday, Feb. 18

SJSU swimming and diving head coach, Sage Hopkins, called it a “tremendous night” after Limargo’s performance in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Limargo placed sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke and broke a 12-year school record of 1:01.01 with a time of 1:00.91.

In the 200-meter freestyle, Mathieson swam the fourth-fastest time in school history, with a time of 1:48.83 and finishing in seventh place.

The Spartans ended the day in eighth place with 370.5 points and San Diego State continued to lead with a total of 1,082.5 points.

Saturday, Feb. 19

The final day was packed with four sessions and dozens of events throughout the day.

With many season bests made and records being broken, Hopkins said Saturday was “everything” you would want in a championship meet.

“You can go on and on naming pretty much everyone on the team,” said Hopkins. “There’s been an amazing performance across the board.”

The 200-meter butterfly finals became the highlight of the day after Spartans took both second and third place.

Muzsnay finished second with a time of 1:57.93 and broke the school record of 1:59.03 set back in 2013.

Kovács came right behind Muzsnay, placing third with a time of 1:59.67.

SJSU ended the day in eighth place with a total of 597.5 points and San Diego State taking first with a total of 1,541.5 points.

With the regular season ending, the Spartans prepare for their next meet in the PAC-12 Invitational in Federal Way, Wash. on Sunday.
