The top two powerhouses of the MPSF went head to head in Sunday’s gymnastics meet.
San Jose State came into this matchup setting the bar high, sitting first in the MPSF with an average score of 194.800. The UC Davis Aggies looked to close the gap, trailing 194.619.
The Spartans came out ready to prove that they belong on top, besting the Aggies in the bars and vault, with total scores of 49.125 and 48.975 respectively.
Jada Mazury proved why she is now – in this season alone – a two time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week. Helping the Spartans get out to an early lead, Mazury, along with fellow Spartan Emma Miline, each put up scores of 9.850 on the bars, the best score in this event for either team.
Trying to close the gap on the bars, freshman Ava Scafani of UC Davis gave an uplifting performance with a total score of 9.825.
The Spartans would close out rotation two with Madison Kirsch and Jaudai Lopes each scoring a career high 9.875 on vault, extending the Spartans lead to 98.100 – 97.425.
The beginning of rotation three saw the Aggies on the beam, as the Spartans took to the floor.
Looking to put their team in a position to make a comeback against the Spartans, UC Davis’ Kaitlyn Lyle, Kyla Kessler and Ava Scafani each put up impressive scores of 9.825 on the beam.
With the Aggies on the beam, Mazury took advantage of her time on the floor, putting up an outstanding, career-best 9.900. Fellow Spartan Lauren Macpherson also contributed to the Spartans dominance on the floor with her routine landing a total of 9.875.
With rotation four being the last chance for the Aggies to push ahead of the Spartans, they took full advantage of the opportunity. The Aggies had five out of their six gymnasts score 9.850 and above, with freshman Megan Ray leading the charge, putting up a scorching hot 9.925.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, the Spartans beamed their way to the top, with Emma Miline tying her own school record on beam with an outstanding score of 9.925, while also getting help from Lauren Macpherson and Jada Mazury who each put up scores of 9.875. The total score for the Spartans beam team broke the school record, bringing in a total of 49.300.
With a total score of 196.550 – 195.675, the Spartans claimed victory in a hard fought match. Besting the Aggies in the first three out of four rotations, the Spartans speared their way in front and never looked back.
After a record breaking meet, the Spartans look to continue their dominance at home this Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., as they take on Air Force.
