Women’s basketball loses its 12th straight in New Mexico

The Pit was not the palace for San Jose State women’s basketball, who suffered its 12th consecutive defeat losing to University of New Mexico 57-87.

The Lobos jumped out to an early 11-2 lead thanks to Shaiquel McGruder scoring six of her team leading 18 points. It was a consistent affair throughout each quarter as the Spartans never put up more than 16 points and the Lobos never scored more than 25.

Ella Ogier was the standout for the Spartans once again scoring a team high 13 points. In her last five games she has been averaging 15.4 points and has nine steals in that same time span as well. She has been the leading scorer in the last 5 games with a high of 19 during that time span.

Meghan Oberg has followed up two of her best back-to-back games of the season against Fresno State and UNLV with a rough couple of games. In the past two games against Air Force and New Mexico she has gone 3/11 from the field and didn’t hit a three during that time span as well.

Heading into Monday’s game it looked unlikely that they would snap their 11-game losing streak going against New Mexico at home. The Lobos sit on the peak of the Mountain West and have made easy work of their opponents. Following a 2-3 stretch to end November, they have gone on to win 12 of their last 13 and are currently on a nine game winning streak.

The Spartans’ next matchup against Utah State will be much more pragmatic for snapping their grueling losing streak. Utah State is 6-12 overall and has won one Mountain West game. Before beating Wyoming on Saturday they were on a nine game losing skid.
