After getting ahead early and winning the doubles point, San Jose State (4-4) couldn’t keep its momentum in singles play, losing 4 of its 5 matches against Saint Mary’s College (3-5) while the last went unfinished.
The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Gaels at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.
Spartans Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey took out their opponents winning six straight games 6-0 to get doubles play going.
Tamara Culibrk & Miyo Kobayashi then lost their match 6-3, which put the pressure on #56-Sybille Gauvain& Marie Klocker to win their match and secure the opening point. SJSU’s top duo came through; winning the tightest of the three doubles matches 7-5.
It was then on to singles with the Spartans up 1-0 where things went downhill.
Klocker, who came out on top in her doubles match, was the only Spartan to win a singles match on the day winning 6-3 in consecutive sets.
Dans, Rey and Kobayashi all went down in straight sets.
The Gaels locked up the victory when Jana McCord, in the only three-set singles match of the contest, finished off Gauvain, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
McCord’s win clinched the match for Saint Mary’s, putting an early end to Culibrk’s match when the overall score was too much to overcome.
SJSU returns to the court at 1:30 p.m. today against the University of Portland. The non-conference matchup will again take place on the courts of the Almaden Valley Athletic Center.
