San Jose State women’s basketball (3-12, 0-4 MW) looks to gamble its chances with the University of Nevada Las Vegas Lady Rebels (13-4, 5-1 MW) Wednesday night.
The Spartans are coming back off a loss against the Fresno State Bulldogs, where the final score was surprisingly closer than expected, 87-74.
Senior forward Meghan Oberg led the team with a career-high 19 points and four rebounds. Oberg was 6-7 with 15 points in just the first half.
SJSU could not keep up during the final quarter and fell flat in the last 10 minutes after trailing FSU 55-51, which led the Bulldogs to another victory.
Junior guard Ella Ogier absolutely killed it, adding 19 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Fresno’s Haley Cavinder, one half of the prolific Cavinder twins, was on fire against the Spartans and finished with yet another triple double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists.
The loss against FSU adds another tick to SJSU’s eight-game losing streak, now making it nine.
The Spartans will try again for another win at UNLV against the Lady Rebels Wednesday night.
SJSU will look for its star forward Cydni Lewis to step up scoring if they want to defeat the Rebels.
Lewis has struggled from the floor against Fresno State this year as she scored well under her season average of 12 points per game in both outings.
UNLV is currently on a three-game winning streak after securing a victory against the Utah State Aggies Saturday, 86-68.
The Lady Rebels are fierce competitors especially with players like sophomore forward Nneka Obiazor, who averages 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds and sophomore center Justice Desi-Rae Young who leads the Rebels in points and rebounds with 15.8 and 7.5, respectively.
SJSU is going to have to bring up the heat and momentum to slay UNLV and end its losing streak.
The Spartans play the Lady Rebels during their Racial Equity & Justice Awareness night in the Provident Credit Union Event Center at SJSU Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
