Cavinder twins too much for women’s hoops

San Jose State women’s basketball suffered its second defeat of the season to Fresno State on the road Saturday 87-74.

Bulldogs’ junior guard Haley Cavinder collected her second triple-double of the season to help lead Fresno State to victory, extending its winning streak to three games, while increasing San Jose State’s losing streak to nine.

The Cavinder twins, Hanna and Haley, combined for 17 of the 21 points scored by the Bulldogs in the first quarter before going scoreless in the second quarter.

The Spartans began the second quarter playing physical defense, while senior forward Meghan Oberg capitalized on multiple open looks finishing the half with 15 points on an efficient 6-7 from the field. 

San Jose State continued to play great defense to start the second half, holding the Bulldogs to an over five-minute scoring drought. Fresno State responded with an 8-0 run to end the third quarter. In total, there were eight lead changes heading into the fourth frame.

The Bulldogs took command in the final quarter, outscoring the Spartans 32-23 shooting 71% from the field to win the game.

Junior guard Hanna Cavinder led the Bulldogs in scoring with 24 points as her sister Haley dropped a 17-point triple double with 14 rebounds and 13 assists on zero turnovers.

Meghan Oberg and junior guard Ella Ogier led the Spartans in scoring with 19 points each, both having efficient nights from the field. Ogier finished 7-9 from the floor, draining her only 3-point attempt and going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Oberg finished the game 7-11 from the field, making two of her three attempts from beyond the arc and a perfect 3-3 from the line.

The San Jose State women’s basketball team looks to end its losing streak at home against UNLV Wednesday at 6 pm.
