Hawaii sophomore quarterback Chevan Cordeiro is transferring to San Jose State.
On Dec. 1st, Cordeiro took to Twitter to let the world know he was transferring from Hawaii. A little over a week later, he found a new home in San Jose.
“After much thought, deliberation and prayer with my family and friends, I’ve decided to seek an opportunity to continue my football and academic career elsewhere,” Cordeiro said in his Twitter post. “Hawaii will always be my home and I wish nothing but the best for and continued success to the Rainbow Warrior football program.”
This season, Cordeiro led the Rainbow Warriors to a 6-7 record and a birth in the Hawaii Bowl. He threw for 2,793 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
In his career at Hawaii, Cordeiro threw for 6,167 yards, 45 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
With quarterback Nick Starkel graduating, Cordeiro is transferring to an SJSU team that is seeking a starting quarterback in 2022. He will have to beat out junior quarterback Nick Nash, who started for the Spartans when Starkel got hurt. He will also face some competition from freshman Walker Eget. It will be fun to watch the quarterback competition and to see which one of these three players will be starting for the Spartans come fall 2022.
The news is another huge blow to the Hawaii football program that has seen its fair share of bad news this season. Earlier this week, head coach Todd Graham came under fire after it was reported that several Hawaii football players were verbally abused by Graham. This may have led to Corderio’s decision to leave Hawaii.
We will have to wait until Springtime to see Corderio rocking Spartans’ blue and gold.
