San Jose State men’s water polo (15-14, 3-2 GCC) clashes against the Pepperdine Waves (14-12, 4-1 GCC) on Friday in its first game of the Golden Coast Conference Championship in Irvine, CA.
The Spartans ended their season on a two-game losing streak against UC Santa Barbara 13-4 and Stanford 18-12.
SJSU faced quite a bit of trouble this season, only barely finishing on a positive score with an overall season record of 15-14.
Luckily for them, the Spartans will face off against a fairly equal opponent.
Historically, SJSU has not faired well against the Waves, losing every single game in the past six years against them except for this season where it won both its regular season matchups against 10-9 and 11-9.
Pepperdine has also faired similarly in its own games this 2021 season with an overall score of 14-12 and losing its last three games of the season.
Despite having the edge by winning twice against them this season, the Spartans only did so by close margins.
This match up is on anyone’s table and if SJSU does win, they will have a tougher time as they go further in the tournament.
Watch the Spartans compete against the Waves on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, CA. Livestream of the GCC Championships will be streamed on UC Irvine’s Athletic website.
