San Jose State volleyball (7-9) defeated the University of Wyoming (8-6) 3-2 on Saturday.
The match was a back-and-forth affair in Laramie, Wyo. as both teams alternated set wins before SJSU decided it in the fifth.
Arguably the most thrilling moment in the match was the second set’s match point, when a frantic rally between the two teams ended with Wyoming scoring and taking the set.
SJSU won the third set in convincing fashion as a collective attacking effort sealed the wire-to-wire set victory. But set four belonged to Wyoming as the Cowgirls pulled away late in the frame, in part because of a couple service aces from outside hitter Hailey Zuroske.
The Spartans led throughout the penultimate set, but were forced to take a timeout on their match point as the Cowgirls got as close as 14-12. Able to regroup, freshman Allyson Alden’s kill sealed the victory for the SJSU as it finished the season 7th in the Mountain West.
Sophomore blocker Haylee Nelson continued her stellar play on the court this season, leading the Spartans with 20 kills and 47 total attacks on the day. Alden and redshirt senior Latahevai Lousi had 15 kills each against the Cowgirls while the former trailed just behind Nelson with 40 total kills in the match.
With the spring 2021 season over the Spartans will look to the fall, as they attempt to build on a signature win against a strong conference opponent.
