Sophomore Rebecca Petoe swims a career-best but Spartans swam short for eighth place

The San Jose State women’s swimming and diving team had a combined of 345 points putting the team in eighth place out of eight teams in the Mountain West Championship over the weekend in Las Vegas. 

The Spartans did not participate in the dive portion of the MW Championship Saturday Feb. 20.

Here is the day-by-day breakdown of the tournament.

Wednesday Feb. 17

Spartan sisters, freshman Reagan and junior Makenna Mathieson, along with freshman Ally Chislett and senior Megan Green placed eighth in the 800-yard freestyle relay team. 

Senior Madison Grimes, junior Izzie Fraire, Sophomore Rebecca Petoe and Reagan Mathieson finished in seventh place in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Spartans ended the first day with 90 points in seventh place, six points shy of sixth place Colorado State.

Thursday Feb. 18

Makenna Mathieson swam 24.01s for the 50-yard freestyle bonus heat to advance her into the finals to swim a 24.24s where she placed 24th. 

Peteo, Fraire, Makenna Mathieson and freshman Kayla Craft-Williams with a time of 3:52.60 placed eighth in the 400-yard medley relay. 

The Spartans finished the second day off  with a team score of 135 points to place them in eighth place behind Fresno State with 268 points. 

University of Nevada, Reno with 499 points and UNLV with 489 points were the two teams on top of the leaderboard. 

Friday Feb. 19

Peteo advanced into the finals on Friday night by swimming her career-best 55.96s in the Friday morning prelims and ended the night in eighth place for the 100-yard fly finals.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team clocked in at 1:37.13 to finish in eighth place. 

The Spartans finished the third day with 267 points in eight place out of the eight teams landing them 281 points behind the seventh place holder Fresno State. 

UNLV held the second place position with 916 points while SDSU moved to first place with 926 points and Nevada went down to third place with 892 points.

Saturday Feb 20

The Spartans began the last day 659 points away from SDSU and 649 points away from UNLV and to be able to catch up to the top of the leaderboard will be a miracle. 

The 400-yard freestyle relay was the final event of the MW Championship. 

The Spartans are 659 points from first place SDSU 

UNLV was one point ahead of the Nevada Wolf Pack when both teams entered the pool area. 

The adrenaline was up for both teams yet UNLV squeezed by and defeated Nevada by a split second 3:21.09 having UNLV win its second MW title the first time in 16 years.

SJSU’s Reagan Mathieson, Chislett, Green, and Makenna Mathieson finished eighth in the final event of the day. 

The Spartans finished off the MW Championship with 345 points and in eighth place which is how the team’s 2020-2021 season ended.
