Wearing their all yellow kit, San Jose State men’s soccer (1-0, WAC) left St. George, Utah walking on sunshine.
The Spartans scored two goals within the last 10 minutes of the match as they defeated Dixie State 2-1 in an opening day thriller.
Junior defender Jamal Adam scored his first collegiate goal as he tied the game for SJSU in the 78th minute. Senior midfielder Nicolas Brenes scored the game winner in the 84th minute and the Spartan bench erupted in euphoria when they took the lead. Senior forward Rudi Castro helped sparked the rally with two assists.
Senior midfielder Carlos Gomez-Zavala and sophomore midfielder Jered Mariani each had an assist for the Spartans.
The Trailblazers (0-2, WAC) got on the board first with a strike from redshirt Junior midfielder Idris Alabi in the 13th minute. Junior defender Matt Lockwood got the assist on the Alabi goal.
It might have been the first game of the season but the hostility between both teams was there.
There were a combined 18 fouls and four players got yellow cards as both teams played aggressively.
This was the third straight season opener that SJSU has won.
The Spartans will get a week off before they have their home opener next Saturday. They host Grand Canyon University at the Spartan Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
