Efforts from Dalcourt, Washington not enough in loss to Boise State

Jalen Dalcourt and Richard Washington combined for 49 points as San Jose State basketball (1-6, 0-4 MW) lost to Boise State on Saturday, 87-86.

Washington had a quiet first half. But he woke up in the second half— in Richard Washington fashion — to the tune of 20 points including five 3-pointers.

Dalcourt made seven of his 11 field goal attempts in his Division I debut. The transfer from Iowa Western Community College led the Spartans in scoring in the first half with eight points.

Washington sparked an early scoring run in the second half to bring the score level after SJSU trailed by eight points at the break.

The Spartans hung within striking distance throughout the remainder of the half, and with 37 seconds left Washington drained a step-back three to give them a one-point lead.

But Broncos forward Abu Kigab put SJSU away with a jumper to give them the lead for good as Washington’s subsequent 3-point attempt fell short.

Sophomore Omari Moore filled up the stat sheet (seven points, eights assists, two blocks, one steal), while freshman Nate Lacewell scored 11 points with seven rebounds in the first start of his career.

Second-chance points were 18-2 in Boise State’s favor. The Broncos had seven turnovers to the Spartans’ 13, while forward Mladen Armus grabbed six offensive boards (SJSU had four as a team).
