From having a record of 5-11 last season, Spartan Football is now one game away from competing in the Mountain West championship if they defeat the Wolfpack in Las Vegas.
All players are essential like Tyler Nevens and Kairee Robinson with a run game that produced 263 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors last week, fans are excited to see what comes next.
The last time SJSU started the season 6-0 was in 1939 — ending the season with a 13-0 record.
There are many keys to lead to a win against Nevada but these are three players to watch during the game tonight.
1. Senior quarterback Nick Starkel who is also a Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Honoree.
This season he has rushed for 1,147 yards with 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
A tall task is ahead for Starkel after only two scoring passes with 11/23 passing for 176 yards against the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors.
In order to Win against Nevada Starkel needs to run at least 170 with 3 touchdown passes.
2. Sophomore running back and Paul Hornung Honoree Kairee Robinson.
Robinson registered his two longest runs of the season last week at Hawai’i with a 20-yard and 25-yard carry with one touchdown.
Nevada has a strong defense so Robinson and the Spartan running game must establish the run game early, limit fumbles and punch the football into the endzone when needed.
3. Senior Wide Receiver Tre Walker and Maxwell Award Honoree.
This season Walker has scored 24 receptions running 324 yards catching three touchdowns.
He is now four receptions away from being No. 3 on the all-time SJSU reception list.
His last game against the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors wasn’t his best. Walker needs to ignite San Jose State’s offense by notching around 100 yards and some crunch-time plays.
