San Jose State football travels to Hawai’i looks to continue its winning season against the Rainbow Warriors.
The Spartans’ last few games scheduled against Fresno State and Boise State were canceled due to opponents’ COVID-19 complications.
“There’s cancellations everywhere,” said SJSU head coach Brent Brennan.
This could be seen as a setback for the Spartans because they have not engaged in real gameplay since their game against UNLV on Nov. 14. SJSU has been one of the few schools that has upheld strict COVID-19 guidelines.
“They are doing it because they care deeply and have passion for the sport that they love,” said SJSU athletic director Marie Tuite.
Tuite mentioned that the Spartans have made a multitude of sacrifices in order to play this season, one being having to spend Thanksgiving secluded from family.
“Football has been an incredible and positive thing for their well being and mental health,” Brennan said.
This season Hawai’i has shown to be one of the only schools that SJSU has faced with a balanced attack. The Rainbow Warriors are fifth in the conference in passing and sixth in rushing. The Spartans need to maintain a solid passing game to contend with Hawai’i’s defense.
“They’ve got a good offensive front and the skill positions are playmakers,” Brennan said.
The Rainbow Warriors are 3-3 this season but this does not mean that a win will be easily attainable for the Spartans. Hawai’i has faced schools that SJSU could not and is coming off a big victory against Nevada.
“We haven’t played for two weeks, but before that we were playing good football,” Brennan said.
The Spartans must play with the same intensity that they exhibited at the beginning of the season in order to continue their undefeates start.
“Get your popcorn ready, it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Brennan said.
The Spartans will play today in Hawai’i at 3 p.m.
