Spartans falter, fall in the Semifinals of Social Distancing Series

It was a bittersweet ending for the San Jose State Rocket league team on Tuesday as it lost a nailbiter to San Diego State in the Semifinals of the new “Social Distancing Series.”

After going down 2-1 in a best of 5 series, the Spartans fought back in overtime during game four and forced a game five.

During game five, sophomore team captain “DD” scored the first goal, which remained the lone goal for most of the match. That was until the last 15 seconds when SDSU scored to force overtime.

The Aztecs outlasted the Spartans and beat them 2-1, which allowed them to capture the series and knock SJSU from the tournament.

“We’re definitely going to work on improving as a team,” said sophomore ItsJohnny. “We had very few team plays versus SDSU that could’ve made the difference.”

While the Spartans suffered a final-game heartbreaker, they did well overall in the tournament.

In the first round matchup against University of Nevada the team won 3-0, namely a clean sweep for the Spartans.

The next match was against Boise State. BSU was the host of the event and was looking to defend home turf, or stream that is. SJSU handled the Broncos in the series, 3-1.

“Today we experimented with a new playstyle, and we’re happy with how it is developing,” team captain “DD” said after the match. “Although we narrowly lost to SDSU, I’m sure we’ll have our revenge next week.”

The SJSU Rocket team, the lone team able to participate while in quarantine, looks forward to next week’s matches, when it again plays in the Mountain West Social Distancing Series.

The series is held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on Boise State’s Twitch channel.
