UPDATE 2:
The San Jose State Football Twitter page has announced that the program is canceling all spring football and recruiting activities through April 5. This includes the spring game that was scheduled for March 28.
UPDATE:
San Jose State athletic director Marie Tuite has released the following (partial) statement:
The coronavirus (COVID-19) continues impacting all of our lives. We are in agreement with and support the Mountain West’s announcement today to suspend spring sports competitions. The action is in the best interest of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and friends of San Jose State University athletics.
Original story: After concerns over the rapidly growing coronavirus pandemic, the Mountain West announced in a statement Thursday that it is suspending all spring sport competitions indefinitely.
The statement also says that the status of non-MW affiliated sport programs will be determined by the individual institutions. For San Jose State, this includes beach volleyball, gymnastics, swimming and diving and water polo.
This also includes SJSU’s spring football practice, which has an open-practice scheduled for Friday night and its annual spring game scheduled on March 28.
The announcement comes after an eventful news cycle in the sports world as concern of the coronavirus grows.
Most major conference tournaments in both men’s and women’s college basketball have been canceled. Most notably, the NBA suspended its season indefinitely after two Utah Jazz players tested positive for the virus.
San Jose State athletics is yet to comment on the matter and it remains to be seen whether non-MW sports or spring football will continue.
The Spear will update this story as more information becomes available.
